spikearoony
Personality:
Kentucky is very quiet and shy around people she does not know. Once she gets to know someone better, she does start to open up a little bit more to the point where people realize that she wears her heart on her sleeve. She also tends to follow her gut instinct a lot and, so far, it's been pretty spot on, even when she ignores it.
She used to be a goody two-shoes, always following the rules, which was something that was impressed upon her in the military. However, due to her new circumstances, she finds that her morals and ethics have shifted to be a bit more gray, though there are still a few things that she does not budge on. If anyone has issues with those, they either get told to go away or, if they get a bit too belligerent, a good fist to the fist and a nasty shiner left behind as a reminder.
She also feels great comfort in being in control of a situation, something she had even before the crash. When she's not in control, she gets flustered and is more likely to cause mistakes. She does not let anyone else drive or fly her anywhere, preferring to be the one behind the controls. That one was a direct result of the crash. She's a very good driver and a natural pilot.
She doesn't like standing still for a very long time. She tends to be a very active person, pacing and talking with her hands. She can keep still, but will fidget her hands and mess with things after a while. She has also kept some habits from her military life, such as how she folds her clothes and makes her bed, and even standing at parade rest when talking to someone.
Backstory:
Kentucky was born and raised in a small town on a farming colony planet. When her parents died due to an illness, she had only some family members that she barely knew that didn't know exactly what to do with her. She was sent to a military school, where she was one of the top ranking students, but was always passed over for awards except in ground school and shooting.
When she was old enough to do so, Ky started pilot school, become the top flyer in her class and she was noted for having a natural ability. She graduated and joined the military as a fighter pilot. After a few years of flying, she was doing a check-ride with another pilot when the other pilot, trying to show off, improperly did a maneuver that caused them to crash into the ground. Ky survived, badly injured, but the pilot did not. After that, Ky had issues getting into planes and she, not wanting to be stuck behind a desk, retired.
With nowhere else to go, Ky looked around and did a few odd jobs, even being able to get over her fear of flying and piloting, but still not trusting anyone else behind the controls. If anyone tried, she would smack their hands away or get really tense and have a hand on the control yoke just in case. Finally, she was offered a permanent position by an old military friend of hers to do some package delivery at his company in Adaptive. So, she took the chance and made the trip. However, only a few weeks of working at the company and her boss gets murdered due to him owing someone a lot of money and they got tired of his empty promises to pay. Once again left without a job and money, Ky's stuck on the planet, using her driving skills to deliver anything that people want to have delivered quickly and discretely. She's also a pretty good shot, so if anyone was looking for an extra gun, she was willing and able to step in for the right price. After all, a girl's gotta eat.
Sample:
She looked at her boarding pass in her hand, clutching the paper tightly and nervously.
[Well, this is it,] Kestrel thought. She had finally managed to find a job, thanks to an old military buddy of hers that lives on this planet called Adaptive. Kestrel's seen all of the commercials and pamphlets talking about the place, but she had this gut feeling that maybe this wasn't such a great idea. However, she has nowhere else to go and, despite getting a pretty good retirement pay plan because of her rank before retiring, a bunch of it has already gone to therapy bills and a small amount of savings. She needs money and something to do. So, package transport it is. But first, she has a plane to board.
Kestrel takes a deep breath before giving the woman behind the counter her ticket. After having it scanned, she boards the airplane, taking the window seat so she can look at the clouds. It's more relaxing, easier to sleep against the wall, and it actually helped with her fear of flying a bit as she would be able to see if there were any issues before the flight attendant gives everyone else the "everything's fine, but please keep your seatbelts fastened" spiel.
After everyone boards and puts their bags away, the plane gets ready for take off. She still has a gut feeling that things may not be as easy as it seems, but at this point their already taxiing. For good or for worse, she was off and on her way.
